May 7th saw one of the most unpredictable and closely fought general elections in years. Not until the BBC released the exit poll results at 10pm was anyone sure of who was going to be governing the country. Would it be a minority Conservative government propped up by Ukip or the DUP? A Labour/SNP Coalition? Would the Liberal Democrats survive at all?
Nobody expected the Conservatives to win an outright majority, so the country watched through the night, as did I, at Alexandra Palace, north London, to cover the two Haringey seats results; Tottenham and Hornsey and Wood Green, for the London Evening Standard. I had extra special interest as my constituency, Hornsey and Wood Green, was turning into one of the closest fought in London was between Liberal Democrat Home Office Minister Lynne Featherstone and Catherine West of the Labour party.
As far as the paper was concerned they needed one image of the successful MP’s, but as I was there all night I decided to shoot my own behind the scenes photo story as the night unfolded.
